Common Mistakes & Misunderstandings
Spacing is critical for decoding: In Morse code, a single space separates letters and a forward slash (/) or double space separates words. When entering Morse code to decode, getting this spacing wrong will produce garbled output. Each letter's dot-dash pattern must be spaced from adjacent letters.
Morse code is uppercase only: Traditional Morse code has no distinction between uppercase and lowercase letters. "A" and "a" are the same Morse pattern (.-). The output of text-to-Morse conversion is always uppercase.
Not all characters have Morse equivalents: Standard Morse code covers letters A–Z, digits 0–9, and common punctuation. Special characters, emoji, and accented letters (é, ñ, ü) don't have universal Morse equivalents and may be dropped or approximated.
SOS is not three letters — it's a prosign: In genuine emergency Morse, SOS is sent as a single continuous prosign (···---···) with no gaps between the letters, not as S-pause-O-pause-S. This distinction matters in real emergency signalling.
