What is Pig Latin?
Pig Latin is a playful word game that transforms English words by moving the initial consonant sound(s) to the end and adding ‘ay’, or by appending ‘yay’ to words that start with a vowel. It’s great for fun, practice with phonemes, and simple language play.
How does this translator apply the rules?
Vowel-start words get ‘yay’ appended (e.g., ‘apple’ → ‘appleyay’). Consonant-start words move the leading consonant cluster to the end and add ‘ay’ (e.g., ‘banana’ → ‘ananabay’). These rules are applied per word while preserving spacing.
When does ‘y’ count as a vowel?
Enable the ‘Treat y as vowel’ option to treat ‘y’ as a vowel inside or at the end of a word, but not at the very beginning. For example, ‘yellow’ becomes ‘ellowyay’ while ‘rhythm’ becomes ‘ythmrhay’ vs ‘rhythmay’ depending on the setting.
Does it keep capitalization and punctuation?
Yes. Capitalization patterns (lowercase, Title Case, ALL CAPS) are preserved, and leading/trailing punctuation stays in place. Only alphabetic word cores are transformed; numbers, emojis, and symbols remain unchanged.
How are hyphenated words handled?
Hyphenated words are processed segment-by-segment. Each part around the hyphen is translated independently, and hyphens remain intact (e.g., ‘mother-in-law’ → ‘othermay-inyay-awlay’).
Can it translate Pig Latin back to English?
Yes. Switch to ‘Pig Latin → English’ to reverse typical Pig Latin forms. Reverse conversion works best when the input follows standard Pig Latin patterns (‘yay’ for vowels, ‘ay’ for consonants).
Will reverse translation always be exact?
Usually, but not always. Some words can be ambiguous, and unconventional Pig Latin spellings may not map cleanly back. Hyphenation, unusual punctuation, or non‑English words can also reduce accuracy.
What characters are processed?
Only A–Z letters are transformed. Whitespace is preserved, and non‑alphabetic tokens (digits, symbols, emojis) are left as-is so the structure of your text doesn’t change.
